When using Hook and Loop Diapers, I have had problems with the loop laundry tabs chaffing baby's thighs on larger settings. To prevent this, I make fabric tab covers that fold over the laundry tabs when the diaper is worn. They are very simple to make, and you can even add them to pre-made diapers if needed.

Step 1. Cutting the Tabs

Cut out your diaper layers and EZ Adjust Tape™ pieces as usual.

There are two ways to make the tab covers: stitched and turned or zig-zag or serged around the edges. Which way you make them depends on your preference and your inner fabric choice. Mine is made using polyester suede cloth which is not stretchy and does not fray. Either method works fine with this type of fabric, but fabrics that are stretchy and can fray easily will probably lay smoother using the turned method.

For zig-zag or serged tabs, cut two strips of your inner fabric that are 4" long by 1 3/4" wide. For stitched and turned tabs, cut two strips 4 1/2" long by 2 1/4" to give you a seam allowance. These measurements are for 1 1/2" wide EZ Adjust Tape. If using a different width of hook and loop tape, adjust measurements as needed. You want your tabs to be just a bit bigger around than your laundry tabs, for good coverage.

Step 2. Making the Tabs

For zig-zag tabs, simply fold each strip in half, and zig-zag around the three cut sides using a wide width, medium length zig-zag stitch. I rounded the corners on mine.

For stitched and turned tabs, fold them in half, right sides together, and sew the sides. Leave the end open for turning. Turn them right side out, fold in the raw edges at the opening, and pin closed.

Step 3. Sewing Tabs to Diaper Inner

First, position the loop laundry tabs according to the pattern markings, and sew them down. I find a wide zig-zag that slightly overlaps the edges of the tape works well. Pin the folded edge of the tab cover to the inner, just past the edge of the laundry tab toward the center of the diaper.

Straight stitch along folded edge of the tab, making sure to backstitch securely at both ends. Sew second tab the same way

Step 4. Sew Diaper as Usual

The rest of the diaper is sewn according to pattern instructions. Just be sure that the tabs are out of the way when you do the topstitching. Here is my finished diaper with Laundry Tab Covers.

And the diaper outside, just for fun, because it is such cute tiny fluff for unborn baby!
